Reflection
Description - The task for this project was to use handmade coils to sculpt a clay form. Most students used to smooth the coil out into a smooth pot or bowl, but I choose to create more of a traditional decorative incorporation of the coils. Key skills that were practiced were formation of coils and smoothing out uneven surfaces. For example, most students stacked coils onto each other with the score and slip method and used their hand and fingers to smooth out the coils. Students used clay as their media.
Analysis - The key element of art used was probably line or shape, because the walls are made up of different shapes and a variety of lines to guide the viewers eye across the piece. This was important to create enough to look at and the variety from smooth and rough. For example, the smooth bottom part of the bowl sets itself aside from the coils and rough parts of the bowl. Your eyes probably go to the round balls in the center of the bowl, the paint also fell really nicely inside of the cracks of the bowl.
Interpretation - The purpose of this artwork is just to explore new textures and shades within a clay body structure. I also was able to explore how glaze will react to highly texture surfaces, for example, the use and distribution of shape and form created a different reaction from the glaze, it stuck in the cracks and was super thin on the more prominent bits.
Evaluation - Some parts of the piece that were successful was the actually coils forms that I made for the walls. I could improve the glaze job and make it bigger. I enjoyed the process of making it but the outcome came out sloppier than i had intended, for example, the glaze wasn't a pretty color because I applied too little.
